With the crypto market looking pretty down at the moment, this is perhaps the best time to learn a little bit about improving our DeFi experience if you use MetaMask very frequently.
This is one of my many blog posts that are stuck in draft status which I’m reviving.
During the past week, it came to my attention that a lot of people don’t really know that much about what they’re doing when it comes to crypto.
In my case, I use Metamask all the time because my wife and I play Crypto Raiders on a regular basis.
Crypto Raiders runs on the Polygon blockchain and more than once, we have had issues with Metamask because it was unable to display and send transactions promptly for our accounts.
This can happen because the node provider does not allocate dedicated resources to each user, which causes it to be slow sometimes, i.e. for transaction broadcasting.
If you recall the standard setup procedures for adding a new EVM-compatible blockchain to Metamask, there is a RPC (remote procedure call) URL that is required.
You can see the sample settings in the screenshot below.
When most people follow a standardized setup, that means that the majority of all users would be using the same RPC URL.
Well, that’s not good, right?
How To Add Alchemy RPC Endpoints
While there are plenty of alternatives for doing this, but I have found that one of the easiest to setup is to use Alchemy.
At first glance, at least it was the case to me, it seems like Alchemy is only for crypto developers but I’m happy to be wrong!
Creation of a free Alchemy account can be easily done, or simply by signing in with your Google account.
Once that is done, simply create an app for each of the blockchain that you want, using the default settings.
And that’s it, just one pop-up box to fill it and click on Create App.
To obtain the custom RPC that we need, simply click on View Key and the second item (HTTP) is what we want.
What we need to do now is to head over to Metamask and create a new network. Keep every single field as same as the original network e.g. Polygon but replace the New RPC URL with your personal Alchemy-specific one in screenshot.
Under the Chain ID field, it will prompt a warning that “This Chain ID is currently used by the Matic Mainnet network” (or whichever chain you’re trying to add) but it is perfectly fine.
Everything would now work just like you’d expect upon selecting the network.
On the plus side, we can also see complementary stats if that’s your cup of tea.
The idea of this blog post is just to illustrate how easy it can be to add Alchemy RPC endpoints to Metamask, and I would highly recommend you to visit Alchemy’s documentation and YouTube video to get a more detailed explanation.
Advantages of using Alchemy
I’m not really into NFTs so my primary motivation for using Alchemy is simply for a more reliable experience on Polygon.
In fact, there were times when the default RPC was laggy or stopped working but Alchemy worked without a hitch.
Besides, this little trick can come in handy in the event of any deliberate attempt via geofencing to render Metamask unusable by certain providers.
To re-iterate, the base tier of using Alchemy is free and I haven’t paid a single cent for using it.
